Sidekick Pro uses three file types, and knowing which is which makes moving content around easy:
- .sidekick — A single document: one game, one slide deck, one song.
- .sidekickplaylist — A full presentation with all its items.
- .sidekickbackup — Your entire library: every document, presentation, folder, and media file in one archive.
All three include any embedded images and videos, so what you export is complete.
Importing
The fastest way to import: drag the file onto the Sidekick Pro window. You’ll see a “Drop to Import” overlay — release, and it’s in your library.
You can also use the menu bar: File → Import .sidekick File… (Cmd+Shift+I) or Import .sidekickplaylist File…. Or use the import menu in the app’s toolbar, which includes Import .sidekick File from Link… — paste a direct URL, including Dropbox and Google Drive share links, and Sidekick downloads it for you.
If you import a presentation containing games you already have, Sidekick will ask whether to Keep Both, Replace, or Keep Mine.
Exporting
- A single document — Open it and click the Export button in the toolbar, or right-click it in the library. You get a .sidekick file you can share with another leader.
- A presentation — Right-click it in the Presentation Library and choose Export Presentation. You get a .sidekickplaylist file.

Large exports show a progress bar with a Cancel option. One exception: Read the Room documents can’t be exported individually.
Backing Up Your Whole Library
Go to Preferences → Storage and find the Backup section:
- Export Library Backup… — Bundles everything into a single .sidekickbackup file (saved to Downloads by default). Do this before big events, before switching Macs, and any time you’d be sad to lose your library.
- Import Library Backup… — Restores a backup. You’ll choose between Merge with My Library (adds what’s new, skips duplicates) or Replace My Library (wipes your current library and restores the backup — Sidekick double-checks before doing this).

A backup covers your documents, presentations, folders, and media. App preferences, account sign-ins, and remote pairings are not included — those stay with the app.
